AI search optimization for local businesses gets your business named when people nearby ask Google’s AI or ChatGPT where to go. Google showed an AI answer for 8,658 of the 10,000 searches in our study, so the AI’s answer is often the first thing people read. Here is how they ask, how each AI picks a business, and where we start.
How people ask AI for a local business
Locals ask AI in three ways, and each one can end with your name.
- They ask about a problem. “How do I fix brassy hair?” “Why is my car shaking when I brake?” “How often should I get a massage for back pain?” Google’s AI answers at the top of the page, and the answer often suggests a local pro.
- They ask for the best option, with details. “Best brunch near me with outdoor seating.” “Quiet gym for beginners near downtown.” “Auto shop open on Saturday that works on hybrids.” ChatGPT and Google’s AI Mode answer these with a short list of names, not a page of links.
- They check a name. “Is YourBrand Salon worth it?” “YourBrand Auto reviews.” They want proof before they book, call or walk in.
The details decide it. “Outdoor seating,” “open on Saturday” and “good for beginners” are facts the AI has to find about you somewhere. If no page says it, you won’t be picked for that question, even if it’s true.
How ChatGPT and Google’s AI pick a local business
Both AIs lean on other websites more than on your own. In our study, 80.69% of the links next to brand names in Google’s AI Overviews went to other websites, not the brand’s own site. So a great website on its own isn’t enough.
Google’s AI picks mostly from pages that already rank in Google. When a page it linked also ranked, its typical spot was #6. So you need to be named on the local pages that rank for your customers’ questions, like “best of” lists, city guides and review pages. That is the heart of AI Overview optimization for a local business.
ChatGPT reaches further down. When its linked pages ranked in Google, their typical spot was #21. It also leans on what it already knows about you from across the web. A business named in many trusted places is easier for ChatGPT to recommend.
The two rarely agree on sources. In our study, they shared only 3.33% of their linked pages. A plan for one AI won’t cover the other.
Reviews, listings and local sites AI trusts
These are the kinds of local pages AI leans on:
- Review sites and your Google Business Profile. Recent reviews, star ratings and your replies. Reviews that name the service, like “great balayage” or “fixed my brakes fast,” give the AI more to match.
- Maps and directory listings. Your name, address, phone, hours and services, the same everywhere.
- Local “best of” lists and city guides. These are often the pages that rank for “best [service] in [town].”
- Local news and community sites. Stories, events, sponsorships and local awards.
- Forums and neighborhood groups. Locals ask each other who to use, and Google’s AI reads those threads.
- Your own website. A clear page for each service and each area you serve.
Forum threads help only when they rank near the top of Google. In our study, Reddit pages in Google’s top 3 were linked in the AI Overview 59.93% of the time. Past #10, they were rarely linked.

Keep every listing the same. When pages disagree, like old hours on one site, the AI may pass you over or share the wrong facts. And keep reviews real. Never buy them, write them or offer something in return.
Contractors, real estate, hotels and other local services
The same plan works for any business that serves a local area. Only the questions change.
- Contractors and home services. Homeowners ask what’s wrong and who to call. We cover this in our AI SEO for contractors.
- Real estate. Buyers and sellers ask which agent knows a neighborhood, or what a home is worth. AI search optimization for real estate gets your name into those answers.
- Hotels. Travelers ask where to stay near a venue, with free parking or pet-friendly rooms. AEO for hotels means being named for those details.
- Clinics and dental offices. Patients add filters like insurance and new patients. We cover this in our AI search optimization for healthcare.
- Restaurants, salons, gyms and auto shops. Locals ask for the best place for a need, then check the reviews.
Some people call this GEO for local businesses or LLM SEO for service businesses. It’s the same work: get named on the pages AI trusts and the pages that rank, then track what the AI says.
What we do first
We start with the questions that bring in your best customers, in the area you serve.
- Find the questions. The problem, “best” and check questions locals ask about your services.
- Check the answers. What Google’s AI Overviews, AI Mode and ChatGPT say today, which businesses they name and which pages they use.
- Fix your facts. Make your hours, services and details match on your site and every listing.
- Get on the pages AI trusts. Get your business named on the local lists, guides, news and review pages each AI relies on, and on the pages that rank.
- Track the answers. We obsessively track what each AI says, because the answers move. When we ran the same searches three times, the brands Google’s AI named overlapped only 60.06% on average.
We don’t promise a spot in any AI answer. No one can. We do the work that makes it more likely, and we show you what changes. Your free AI visibility audit shows which businesses AI names in your area and which pages to get on first.
