What Google AI Mode is
Google AI Mode SEO means getting your brand named in the answers Google’s AI Mode writes, by getting it onto the pages AI Mode searches and trusts. AI Mode is a chat-style way to search Google. People ask a long question in their own words and get a written answer, with links to the pages it used. Then they can ask a follow-up, and AI Mode keeps the thread going.
It’s built for questions that used to take several searches. A buyer might ask, “What’s the best robot vacuum for a small apartment with two cats and rugs?” AI Mode answers the whole question at once. Then the buyer asks, “Which one is quietest?” and gets a new answer that builds on the first.
A note on data: our 10,000-keyword study measured Google’s AI Overviews and ChatGPT. It did not include AI Mode. So this page explains how AI Mode works, and it gives no AI Mode numbers.
How AI Mode picks sources
AI Mode builds each answer in a few steps:
- It splits the question. It breaks one question into many smaller, related searches, one for each part. This is called query fan-out.
- It searches Google’s index. It runs those searches at the same time, using the same index and ranking systems as normal Google Search.
- It reads the best passages. It pulls the parts of pages that answer each small question. A page can be picked for one part, even if it doesn’t rank for the whole question.
- It adds product and place details. For shopping and local questions, it can also use the product listings and business profiles Google already has.
- It writes the answer. The brands it names come from what those pages say. The links show which pages it used.
- It starts again on each follow-up. A new question means a new round of searches.
Two rules sit under all of this. A page has to be indexed by Google and allowed to show a snippet before it can be linked. And there is no special file, tag or code for AI Mode.
What this means for you: to be named, your brand needs to be on the pages that rank for the smaller searches behind your buyers’ questions, not only the main one.
How AI Mode differs from AI Overviews
Both are Google’s AI, and both use Google’s index. But they work in different ways, and they can pick different pages for the same question.
| What to compare | Google AI Overviews | Google AI Mode |
|---|---|---|
| Where it appears | At the top of normal search results | In its own chat-style view in Google Search |
| When it appears | Only when Google thinks a summary helps | Whenever someone chooses AI Mode |
| Type of question | Mostly short searches | Longer questions with several parts |
| Follow-up questions | Answers one search at a time | Keeps the thread across follow-ups |
| Searches behind each answer | Some related searches | Many related searches |
| What our study measured | 8,658 of 10,000 keywords had one, and 49.83% of linked pages were in Google’s top 10 | Not in our study |
So work that gets you into AI Overviews also helps in AI Mode, because both lean on pages Google trusts. But AI Mode looks at more related searches, so it rewards brands that are named across a whole topic, not on one keyword. We check each one on its own. For the AI Overviews side, see AI Overview optimization.
How to rank in AI Mode
There’s no shortcut. These five steps cover the work.
1. Let Google index your pages and show snippets
Check your robots.txt file and your host settings. Then check your key pages for tags like noindex, nosnippet and max-snippet. Any of these can keep a page out of AI Mode’s links.
2. Answer the whole task, not one keyword
List the smaller questions behind each buyer question: cost, fit, comparisons, common problems and next steps. Answer them on your site in plain text, with the answer first, under clear headings. One strong page for each real need works better than a thin page for every way of asking.
3. Get named on the pages that rank for those searches
Reviews, “best of” lists, comparisons, forum threads, videos and trusted directories all shape what AI Mode says. For AI Overviews, 80.69% of the links next to brands in our study went to other websites. We didn’t measure AI Mode, but it uses the same index, so other sites likely matter a lot there too.
4. Keep product and business facts current
Keep your Merchant Center product data and your Business Profile complete and correct, if you use them. Make sure prices, hours and details match on your site and everywhere else.
5. Check the answers again and again
AI Mode answers change. Ask your buyers’ questions on a schedule, add the follow-ups they would ask, and write down which brands are named and which pages are linked. Search Console counts clicks from AI Mode with your normal web search clicks, so clicks alone won’t show whether you were named.
Our Google AI Mode SEO services
We do this work for you, as part of one plan that covers Google’s AI and ChatGPT:
- We find the questions. We list the long questions and follow-ups your buyers ask, and the smaller searches behind them.
- We check what AI Mode says. We log which brands it names, which pages it links to and what it gets wrong.
- We fix your site. We work on indexing, snippets, clear answers and current product or business facts.
- We get you named on the pages that rank. We work on reviews, lists, comparisons, news and directories in your field. We don’t buy cheap guest posts.
- We track the answers. We obsessively track what AI Mode says about you, and we keep closing the gaps where a competitor is named instead.
ChatGPT works differently. It uses its own memory and its own web searches, so it gets its own part of the plan: ChatGPT SEO.
Google AI Mode for online stores
Shopping questions suit AI Mode well. A shopper can describe exactly what they need, see a few products, then ask follow-ups like “which one is easiest to clean?” or “will it fit a small kitchen?”
For online stores, we:
- keep your Merchant Center product data complete and correct
- write product pages that answer what shoppers ask about size, fit, materials, care and who it’s for
- get your products named in the reviews, comparisons and gift guides that rank
- make sure prices, stock and details match everywhere
