What is an AI visibility audit?
An AI visibility audit is a check of whether Google’s AI and ChatGPT recommend your brand when your buyers ask them for advice. It shows three things: where you stand in AI, what your buyers ask AI, and how to close the gap. Ours is free and done for you. We run the checks and email you the results.
The audit checks three levels of AI visibility:
- Mentioned: AI names your brand somewhere in the answer.
- Linked: AI links to your site, or to a page that talks about you.
- Recommended: AI tells the buyer to pick you.
Free AI visibility check: what we look at
Our free AI visibility check looks at your brand in 5 steps:
- List your buyers’ questions. We write down what buyers ask AI when they research, compare and choose in your market.
- Ask each AI. We put those questions to Google’s AI Overviews, Google AI Mode and ChatGPT. We ask more than once, because answers change.
- Record who gets named. For each answer, we note whether AI mentions you, links to you, recommends you or leaves you out. We also note which competitors it names instead.
- Map the pages AI trusts. We list the pages each AI links to for those questions, and check which of them mention you.
- Build your gap list. We turn it all into the pages to get your brand onto first, in order.
Check your AI Overviews visibility
To check your AI Overviews visibility, search a buyer question in Google and read the AI summary at the top of the results. See if your brand is named, then open the links beside it to see which pages Google’s AI used. In our study of 10,000 US “best” buying searches, Google showed an AI Overview for 8,658 of them. Most of the links next to brand names in those answers, 80.69%, went to other websites, not the brand’s own site. So we check the pages that talk about you, not just your own pages.
Check your ChatGPT visibility
To check your ChatGPT visibility, ask the same question in a new ChatGPT chat and open its sources. ChatGPT picks brands in its own way. It names brands it already knows and brands it finds while it searches the web. Only 10.87% of the pages ChatGPT linked to in our study were in Google’s top 10 for the same search, so your Google rank tells you little here. Ask each question a few times in new chats, since the brands named can change.
What is a good AI visibility score?
A good AI visibility score is one that beats your main competitors on the questions your buyers ask, and holds up when you check again. There is no standard score that fits every brand, and we don’t make one up. Your score is the share of your buyer questions where AI names you, counted on each platform.
Our study shows why a score needs several checks, not one:
- Brands change more than pages. When we asked Google the same questions three times, the brands named overlapped only 60.06% on average. The pages linked overlapped 90.96%.
- AI Overviews don’t always show. We ran the same 1,000 keywords three times. An AI Overview showed every time for 82.7% of them, on some runs for 7.9%, and never for 9.4%.
- Each platform needs its own score. Google’s AI and ChatGPT shared only 3.33% of the pages they linked to. A good score on one tells you little about the other.

So compare your score with your competitors’ scores on the same questions and platforms. Then track how it moves over time.
A sample AI visibility report
This is an example layout, not real results. It shows how your report is set out. It holds no client’s data.
| Report section | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Where you stand | Each buyer question, with a mark for Google’s AI Overviews, Google AI Mode and ChatGPT: recommended, mentioned, linked or not named |
| Who AI names instead | The competitors named for each question, and how often |
| What your buyers ask AI | Your buyer questions, grouped by researching, comparing and buying |
| The pages AI trusts | The pages each AI links to for those questions, and whether they mention you |
| How to close the gap | The pages to get your brand onto first, in order |
Each row in “Where you stand” shows a question, such as “best [your product] for [your buyer]”, then a mark for each platform and the competitors AI named. To see the kind of findings these checks turn up, read our AI SEO case studies.
AI visibility audit vs SEO audit
An AI visibility audit checks what AI says about your brand, while an SEO audit checks how your own website ranks in Google. You need both, because they look at different things.
| AI visibility audit | SEO audit | |
|---|---|---|
| Main question | Do Google’s AI and ChatGPT recommend you? | Do your pages rank in Google? |
| What it checks | AI answers, the brands named and the pages AI links to | Your pages, site speed, links and rankings |
| Where it looks | Your site and the other websites AI trusts | Mostly your own site |
| What you get | The pages to get your brand onto first | Fixes for your own site |
The two are linked. In our study, 49.83% of the pages Google’s AI Overviews linked to were also in Google’s top 10 for the same search. So good SEO helps you show up in Google’s AI. But an SEO audit won’t tell you whether AI names you or your competitors.
