GEO for law firms gets your firm named when people ask Google’s AI and ChatGPT which lawyer to call. Google showed an AI answer for 8,658 of the 10,000 searches in our study, so the AI’s answer is often the first thing people read. Here is what they ask, how the AI picks a firm, and what we do about it.
How clients ask AI for a lawyer
People ask AI about their problem first and about lawyers second. The first question is “what do I do?” The AI answers it, and the answer often ends with “talk to a lawyer.” That is the first place a firm can be named. Next comes “who should I call?” Last comes a check on one firm before they pick up the phone.
Here is what that looks like in five practice areas.
| Practice area | The problem question | The “who do I call” question | The check before they call |
|---|---|---|---|
| Personal injury | What should I do after a car accident that wasn’t my fault? | Who’s a good car accident lawyer near me? | Is YourBrand Law good with insurance companies? |
| Family law | How do courts decide child custody in my state? | Divorce lawyer near me for a high-conflict case | What do clients say about YourBrand Law? |
| Criminal defense | Do I need a lawyer for a first DUI? | Criminal defense lawyer I can talk to tonight | Has YourBrand Law handled DUI cases in this county? |
| Immigration | How long does a marriage green card take? | Immigration lawyer near me who speaks Spanish | Does YourBrand Law handle family visas? |
| Business law | Should a lawyer review my commercial lease? | Business lawyer for a contract dispute with a supplier | Does YourBrand Law work with small companies? |
Three things stand out:
- The first question has no lawyer in it. If the AI names you there, you are on the list before the person starts looking.
- People type a whole situation. They add the county, the language, the urgency and the kind of case. The AI matches those details to what it has read about each firm.
- Each practice area has its own questions. A firm that handles injury and family cases needs to be known for both, one question at a time.
How ChatGPT and Google’s AI pick a law firm
Neither AI picks a firm from the firm’s own website alone. Both lean on what other websites say, and each one leans in its own way.
Google’s AI stays close to Google’s normal results. In our study, about half (49.83%) of the pages it linked were already in Google’s top 10 for the same search. So a firm named on the pages that rank for “car accident lawyer” in its city has a real edge.
ChatGPT looks wider. Only 10.87% of the pages it linked were in Google’s top 10. It also leans on firms it already knows. In our study, 85% of ChatGPT’s mentions of well-known brands came with no link to the brand’s own site. A firm that is described again and again across the web is easier for it to name.

The two also use different pages, so each one needs its own plan. This is the core of what a GEO agency does: get you onto the pages each AI trusts, and onto the pages that rank.
Where AI finds law firms
The AI builds its picture of your firm from many kinds of pages. The main ones are:
- Legal directories and lawyer profile sites. They list your practice areas, your lawyers and your reviews.
- Review sites and your Google listing. Reviews that mention the type of case give the AI something to match.
- State and local bar pages. They show who is licensed and in good standing.
- Local news. Stories and quotes about your cases or your work in the community.
- Rankings and awards. Only the kind you don’t pay to join. See the rules below.
- Forums and videos. In our study, 49.87% of Google’s AI Overviews linked to Reddit at least once, and 50.81% linked to YouTube. ChatGPT linked to them in under 1% of its answers.
- Your own practice-area pages. They still count, most of all when they rank.
When these pages agree, the AI can describe your firm with confidence. When they don’t, it may skip you or get a detail wrong, like a practice area you left years ago.
AI SEO for law firms: what changes for lawyers
AI SEO for law firms keeps what works in law firm SEO and changes the goal. You still want pages that rank. But the win is being named in the answer, not just getting the click. Some people call this GEO, AEO or AI SEO for law firms. It’s the same work.
| Law firm SEO focused on | AI SEO for law firms adds |
|---|---|
| Your own site ranking | Your firm named on other sites that rank |
| One page per practice area | Clear answers to each situation clients describe |
| Getting more reviews | Reviews that mention the type of case |
| Clicks and form fills | How often each AI names you, by practice area |
| One set of Google results | Google’s AI Overviews, AI Mode and ChatGPT, each with its own sources |
Answers also change from one search to the next. When we ran the same searches three times, the brands Google’s AI named overlapped only 60.06% on average. One check tells you little. That is why we obsessively track the answers over time.
Bar advertising rules and AI answers
State bar advertising rules apply to every page you control, and those pages are what the AI reads about your firm. The AI writes its own answer, so you don’t control its words. But your site, your profiles and any article you place are your own communications.
The rules differ by state, but most cover the same ground:
- No false or misleading claims. Even a true statement can mislead. A past result can suggest the next client will get the same.
- Care with “expert” and “specialist.” Many states limit these words to lawyers certified in that area.
- No paying for recommendations. Paying for an ad is allowed. Paying someone to recommend you usually isn’t, and paying to join a “best lawyers” list can cross that line.
- Honest reviews only. Fake or paid reviews are off limits. Some states add rules for testimonials.
- Filing and records. Some states want ads filed with the bar or kept on file.
Here is how we work inside those rules. We never write fake reviews, pay for awards, promise results or call you the “best.” You approve every page and profile before it goes live, so you can check it against your state’s rules. If an AI answer gets a fact about your firm wrong, we fix it at the source: the pages the AI reads.
This is general information, not legal advice. Check your own state bar’s rules, or ask your ethics counsel.
What we do in the first 90 days
Every firm starts in a different place, so the order can change. This is the usual plan.
Days 1–30: find the questions and the gaps
- List the questions people ask in each of your practice areas, for the places you serve.
- Check what Google’s AI Overviews, AI Mode and ChatGPT say for each one today, and which firms they name.
- Find the pages each AI relies on for those answers.
- Fix wrong or missing facts about your firm on your site, profiles and listings.
Days 31–60: get your firm on the pages AI trusts
- Get your firm named on the directories, local news, lists and guides each AI relies on, and on the pages that rank.
- Rewrite your practice-area pages so each one answers the real question in its first lines.
- Help you ask happy clients for honest reviews, in the way your state allows.
Days 61–90: track and close the gaps
- Obsessively track what each AI says for your questions.
- Show you which questions name your firm, which name other firms, and why.
- Add the next practice area or town to the plan.
The plan is close to our AI search optimization for local businesses and AI search optimization for healthcare. Law firms just have stricter rules to follow. To see where your firm stands today, start with a free AI visibility audit. It shows which firms AI names for your questions and which pages to get on first.
