What Is AI Visibility? How Brands Get Mentioned and Recommended by AI
AI visibility is how often AI tools mention or recommend your brand when people ask them questions. These tools include Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude. If a buyer asks an AI for the best option in your field and it names you, you are visible. If it names your competitors and not you, you are not.
This guide covers what counts as AI visibility, why it matters, how AI decides which brands to name, and how to measure and improve it.
What counts as AI visibility?
Your brand can show up in an AI answer in four main ways. Some are worth more than others.
| How you show up | What it looks like | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Mentioned | Your brand name appears in the answer | The buyer now knows you exist |
| Recommended | The AI suggests you as a good choice | This is the one that leads to sales |
| Linked | The AI links to your website as a source | The buyer can click through to you |
| Described | The AI says what you sell, who it’s for and what it costs | Wrong details can cost you the sale |
A mention with no link still counts. AI tools often name a brand without linking to its website, because they already know the brand from what they learned before. So if you only watch the visits that AI sends to your site, you will miss much of your AI visibility.
Where does AI visibility happen?
Buyers now ask questions in several AI tools. The main ones are:
- Google’s AI Overviews: the AI summary at the top of many Google results.
- Google AI Mode: a chat-style mode inside Google Search for longer questions.
- ChatGPT: an AI chat assistant that can also search the web.
- Gemini: Google’s own AI assistant app.
- Claude: an AI assistant many people use for research and work.
Each tool builds its answers in its own way. In our study of 10,000 AI answers, Google’s AI Overviews and ChatGPT shared only 3.33% of the pages they linked to for the same search, on average. Being visible in one tool tells you very little about the other. You need to check each one.
Why does AI visibility matter?
More buyers now ask AI before they buy. They ask it to explain a problem, list their options, compare brands and check if something is worth the money.
The answer usually names only a few brands. There is no second page to scroll to. If you are not in the answer, the buyer may never hear of you.
AI also shapes what buyers think of you before they reach your website. If it gets your price or features wrong, or calls a rival the better pick, that view tends to stick. So AI visibility is not only about being named. It is also about being described correctly.
How is AI visibility different from SEO visibility?
SEO (search engine optimization) visibility is about where your pages rank in a list of search results. AI visibility is about whether you are named inside the answer itself.
The two are linked. Google’s AI answers draw a lot on pages that already rank well in Google. But there are some big differences:
- There is no page two. You are in the answer or you are not.
- The AI writes about you in its own words. You can’t set the title or the short summary, as you partly can in normal search results.
- Answers change. Ask the same question twice and you may see different brands.
- Other websites matter more. The AI often names you because of what other sites say about you, not because of your own pages.
How does AI decide which brands to name?
AI tools learn about brands in two ways. First, they learn from a huge amount of web text during training, before the tool is released. Second, many of them search the web live and read the pages they find before they answer.
Either way, what the AI knows about your brand comes mostly from the web. And most of the web is not your website. It is review sites, “best of” lists, comparison articles, news stories, forums and videos.
Our study shows how strong this effect is. In Google’s AI Overviews, 80.69% of the links next to brand mentions went to other websites, not the brand’s own site. In ChatGPT, the figure was 57.58%. To be named, your brand needs to appear on the pages AI already trusts for your topic.

AI visibility, GEO and AEO
AI visibility is the result you want and the thing you measure. You will also hear two names for the work that improves it:
- The work of getting into AI-written answers is often called generative engine optimization (GEO).
- The work of being chosen as the answer to a buyer’s question is often called answer engine optimization (AEO).
The two terms overlap a lot. Both aim at the same goal: getting your brand named and recommended by AI.
How do you measure AI visibility?
You measure AI visibility by asking AI tools the questions your buyers ask and recording what comes back. Here is a simple way to do it:
- List your buyers’ questions. Cover every step: learning about the problem, looking at options, comparing brands and choosing one.
- Ask each question in each AI tool you care about, such as AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude.
- Ask more than once. AI answers change. When we asked Google the same question three times, an AI Overview showed all three times for 82.7% of keywords. But the brands named overlapped only 60.06% on average across the three runs. One check can mislead you.
- Write down what you see. Were you named? Recommended? Linked? What did the AI say about you? Which competitors showed up? Which pages did the AI link to?
- Repeat every month and watch the trend.
In the three-search test from step 3, the pages Google’s AI linked to changed much less than the brands it named: they overlapped 90.96% on average in our study of 10,000 AI answers.

From those notes, you can work out the numbers most teams track:
- Mention rate: the share of questions where your brand is named.
- Share of voice: how often you are named compared with your competitors.
- Accuracy: whether the AI describes your products, prices and strengths correctly.
- Sources: the pages AI uses when it talks about your field.
Many tools roll these into one “AI visibility score.” No AI company publishes an official score, so each tool works out its own. Treat a score as a quick summary, not the full picture. For tools and methods, see how to track your brand in AI.

How do you improve AI visibility?
There is no single trick. AI builds its answers from many places, so the work has to cover all of them. A complete plan looks like this:
- Find the gap. Learn what your buyers ask AI, which brands it names today, and which pages it uses to decide.
- Get onto the pages AI trusts. These are the reviews, lists, comparisons and articles the AI already uses for your buyers’ questions. Most of them belong to other websites.
- Get onto the pages that rank. Google’s AI answers lean on pages in Google’s top results. Being featured on those pages helps you in both normal search and AI.
- Make your own site clear. Say what you sell, who it is for and what it costs, in plain words. Make sure AI tools are allowed to read your pages. This helps AI describe you correctly.
- Track and adjust. Check the answers every month. See what moved, and put more effort where it works.
Be wary of anyone who promises a guaranteed spot in AI answers. No one controls what AI says. Good work raises your odds and helps AI describe you correctly, but the answers will still change.
