GEO vs SEO: What Changes and What Stays the Same

SEO (search engine optimization) is the work of getting your web pages to rank in search results like Google’s. GEO (generative engine optimization) is the work of getting your brand named inside AI-written answers from tools like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Google’s AI Overviews. The two overlap a lot, because Google’s AI answers lean on pages that already rank, but GEO also depends on what other websites say about you.

What is SEO?

SEO is how you help search engines find, understand and rank your pages. It has three main parts:

  • Technical: search engines can crawl (visit) and index (store) your pages.
  • Content: your pages answer what people search for.
  • Authority: other trusted sites link to you and talk about you.

Success is easy to see. You rank higher, more people click, and some of them buy.

What is GEO?

A “generative engine” is an AI tool that writes an answer instead of showing a list of links. GEO is the work of getting your brand mentioned and recommended in those answers.

That includes ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini. It also includes Google’s own AI features. AI Overviews are the AI-written summaries at the top of many Google results. AI Mode is a separate Google search mode that writes longer answers to harder questions.

For the full definition, see our guide to generative engine optimization (GEO).

GEO vs SEO: the main differences

SEOGEO
Where you show upA ranked list of linksInside one written answer
What counts as a winA high ranking and a clickBeing named, ideally as a top pick
Whose pages matter mostYour own siteYour site plus other sites that mention you
Which enginesMostly GoogleGoogle’s AI features, ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini
How you measure itRankings, clicks and salesHow often AI names you, and next to whom
How steady it isA ranking gives you one clear numberAnswers can change each time you ask

Here is what each difference means in practice.

In a normal search, ten results share the page and the searcher chooses. In an AI answer, the AI tool does the choosing. It might name three brands and leave out the rest. If you are not one of the brands named, that buyer may never see you.

Your own site vs the whole web

SEO work mostly happens on your own pages. GEO leans much more on other sites. In our study of 10,000 AI answers, 80.69% of the links next to brand mentions in AI Overviews went to other websites, not the brand’s own site. For ChatGPT, it was 57.58%.

In our study, the rest went to the brand’s own site: 19.31% in AI Overviews and 42.42% in ChatGPT.

So GEO includes getting your brand onto the other pages AI draws from, such as reviews, comparisons and trusted industry sites.

One search engine vs many AI tools

SEO mostly means Google. With GEO, each AI tool uses its own sources. In our study, AI Overviews and ChatGPT shared only 3.33% of the pages they linked to, on average.

The gap shows up in the types of sites, too. Reddit appeared in 49.87% of AI Overviews but in only 0.31% of ChatGPT answers. YouTube appeared in 50.81% and 0.16%. A plan that works for Google can miss ChatGPT completely.

Rankings vs mentions

Rankings move, but you can check one and get a clear number. AI answers move around more. We asked Google the same questions three times. An AI Overview showed all three times for 82.7% of the keywords. But the brands named overlapped only 60.06% on average across the three runs.

So GEO needs repeated checks across tools, not a single snapshot.

Where GEO and SEO overlap

The overlap is bigger than the differences suggest, at least on Google.

Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode are built on Google’s normal search systems. To show up in them, a page has to be indexed and able to appear in Google with a snippet (the short text under a search result). There are no special extra steps. On Google, optimizing for AI answers is still SEO at its core.

Our data backs this up. 49.83% of the pages AI Overviews linked to were in Google’s top 10 for the same search. Of the AI Overview links that also appeared in Google’s top 100, the typical (median, or middle) rank was #6.

ChatGPT is less tied to Google. Only 10.87% of the pages it linked to were in Google’s top 10. The median Google rank of its matching pages was #21.

What GEO and SEO share:

  • Pages that search engines and AI bots can crawl and read.
  • Clear content that answers real buyer questions.
  • A good reputation on trusted, relevant sites.

What GEO adds:

  • Finding the questions buyers ask AI, not just the keywords they type.
  • Getting named on the other pages each AI tool draws from.
  • Tracking what AI says about you, across tools, over time.

Generative engine optimization vs traditional SEO: what to do first

You don’t have to choose one. Work in this order:

  1. Fix the basics. Make sure Google and AI search bots can crawl and index your pages. Without this, nothing else works.
  2. Find your buyers’ AI questions. Ask ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Google the questions your buyers ask. Note who gets named. Our free AI visibility audit does this for you.
  3. Rank for the searches that show AI Overviews. Higher ranks get linked far more often. In our study, a page ranked #1 was also linked in the AI Overview 49.19% of the time. At #10, it was 9.83%.
  4. Get onto the pages AI trusts. Aim to be named, with accurate details, on the reviews, comparisons and industry sites that show up for those questions.
  5. Track and repeat. Check the same questions often, because answers change.

AEO vs SEO

AEO (answer engine optimization) is another name you will see. It is about getting your content used as the direct answer: in AI answers, in answer boxes at the top of Google, and in voice assistants.

So the AEO vs SEO split looks a lot like GEO vs SEO. SEO aims for a high ranking and a click. AEO aims to be the answer itself. The overlap is the same, too: on Google, the answer usually comes from pages that already rank. Read more about answer engine optimization (AEO).

Is GEO replacing SEO?

No. Google’s AI features are built on its search rankings, and AI Overviews lean on pages in the top 10. GEO is SEO plus more work off your own site and more tracking. For the longer answer, read about whether SEO still matters.

Most brands need SEO and GEO done as one plan: get onto the pages that rank and the pages AI trusts, then track what AI says. Our free AI visibility audit shows where you stand in AI, what your buyers ask it, and how to close the gap.

Questions people ask

Can you do GEO without SEO?

Not well, at least on Google. Google’s AI features are built on its search rankings, and a page must be indexed to appear. In our study, 49.83% of the pages AI Overviews linked to were in Google’s top 10 for the same search.

Is AEO the same as GEO?

Close enough. Both aim to get your brand and content into AI answers. AEO also covers answer boxes at the top of Google and voice assistants. Most people now use the two terms for the same work.

How do you measure GEO?

Ask the questions your buyers ask in each AI tool, several times, and record which brands get named and which pages get linked. Google Search Console also now shows how often links to your site appeared in AI Overviews and AI Mode.

Which should a small business do first?

Start with SEO basics so your pages can be found and indexed. Then check what AI says about your field, and work on getting named on the sites that show up there. Both parts work best as one plan.
